Air fryer sweet potato wedges recipe is the easiest and most efficient way to cook sweet potatoes with minimal ingredients and effort.

Baked wedges and sweet potato patties are always a hit with my children and there won't be any fuss or tantrums during mealtime. It's a great way to incorporate this incredibly nutritious vegetable into the diet.

My small air fryer has been in use almost every day to make fries, crispy masala peanuts, mini individual desserts, wedges and lots more air fryer recipes.

Why will you this love air fryer sweet potato wedges recipe?

    Beginner friendly

Cook time is less than in conventional ovens.

Air frying requires less oil than you would for deep frying or shallow frying.

A convenient method to bake a small portion of wedges.

    Ingredients

chopped sweet potato, olive oil and seasoning placed on a wooden table.
    • Vegetable: sweet potatoes
    • Spices and Herbs: crushed black pepper, salt and oregano.

Find the quantities and a short video in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

    Instructions

sweet potato wedges with seasonings on top placed in a white plate on a wooden table.

Wash, trim the ends of the sweet potatoes and peel them. Place sweet potato on cutting board and cut in half lengthwise, then quarter. Cut each quarter into wedges.

Place the wedges in a large mixing bowl. Add the oil, salt, pepper and oregano.

seasoned sweet potato wedges in a white bowl placed on a wooden table.

Give it a good toss until the sweet potatoes are coated with oil and seasoning.

Apply oil to the air fryer basket using cooking spray or with tissue.

Put the basket into the air fryer and set the temperature to 200C (400F) for 15 mins.

Once the timer goes off, turn the air fryer off and take the basket out of the air fryer.

Enjoy these delicious air fryer sweet potato wedges with your favorite dipping sauce or with as a delicious side dish with any main meal.

    Substitutions

Freshly minced garlic or powder makes a fabulous addition. However, I would suggest adding the fresh garlic halfway through cooking. Adding fresh garlic at the beginning might result in it getting burnt and mask the true flavours of the seasoned sweet potatoes. Mix in the garlic powder at the beginning along with other seasonings.

Ground cumin adds a lovely earthy flavour.

Switch up the flavours by using bagel seasoning or cajun seasoning.

You could use any other cooking oil such as vegetable oil, avocado oil or even sunflower oil instead of olive oil.

Add garam masala and a dash of lemon juice for a lovely Indian flavour. The spicy kick of garam masala complements the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes. you could use curry powder if you don't have garam masala in hand.

Cayenne pepper or chilli powder could be used instead of pepper powder.

    Tips and Tricks

For proper roasting spread sweet potato wedges into a single layer in the basket. If necessary, divide and roast them in batches rather than overfilling the basket.

It is essential to cut the sweet potatoes into equal sizes for uniform roasting.

Do not forget to remove the basket and shake it well halfway through the roasting to ensure that all sides are well roasted.

The size of the sweet potato wedges determines how long you need to roast them for. The smaller the size the quicker they roast, big chunky wedges take a long time to roast.

The second batch and subsequent batches after frying the first batch are likely to cook faster as the air fryer is already hot. So ensure to keep an eye on the sweet potato slices.

Pat dry raw sweet potato thick wedges with a kitchen towel to remove excess moisture before seasoning.

Cooking time may vary depending on the model and size of the air fryer basket.

Keep chopped wedges in a large bowl of cold water until ready to bake. Ensure to pat them dry before seasoning.

To prep it as a part of meal planning, premake seasoning by mixing salt, pepper and oregano in a small bowl. Transfer the seasoning into a jar with a lid and store it until ready to use.

    Storage

Fridge: Leftover sweet potato wedges could be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Reheat in the air fryer for 4-5 mins to crisp up. Allow the wedges to cool completely to room temperature before you transfer them to an airtight container.

    FAQ

Can sweet potato wedges be stored in the freezer?

I wouldn't suggest storing air fryer sweet potato wedges in the freezer as they lose their crispiness.

Why are baked sweet potato wedges not crispy?

The most common reason is overfilling the basket. For best results, ensure to spread wedges into a single layer in the air fryer basket as it's a key factor to get the wedges to crisp up. Overfilling the basket would result in steaming which makes sweet potato wedges soggy rather than crispy.
