    Air Fryer Baby Carrots (Chantenay Carrots Recipe)

    Air fryer baby carrots is a super easy dish to make with a handful of pantry ingredients. These air fried baby carrots are a vegan, gluten free, sweet and lightly spiced dish perfect as a snack or as a side dish to pair with the main meal.

    Air fried carrots are a great way to incorporate this highly nutritious vegetable into the diet. Maple glazed Chantenay carrots look so appealing even picky eaters come back for more. You can't stop appreciating this beautiful little gem. Soon this baby carrot recipe is going be one of your family's favourite dish.

    Why make these air fryer carrots?

    A healthier alternative to deep-fried foods.

    Require very less oil compared to shallow frying or deep frying. 

    One of the easy recipes for beginners

    Made with just 6 ingredients.

    Ingredients

    • Carrots: I have used Chantenay carrots but regular baby carrots can be used.
    • Seasoning: Salt, pepper.
    • Sweetener: I have used maple syrup.
    • Herbs: Fresh parsley and dried sage.

    How to air fry baby carrots?

    Wash carrots well in cold running tap water.

    Place carrots in a bowl. Add oil, salt, pepper, sage and maple syrup. Mix well until carrots are coated with oil and seasoning.

    Spray or apply oil to the air fryer basket.

    Now arrange baby carrots in air fryer basket with a lined baking sheet in a single layer ensuring they don't overlap.

    Put the basket in the air fryer, set the temperature to 200C (400F) for 14 minutes and air fry baby carrots.

    Take the basket out of the air fryer half way through roasting, shake well, put it back and continue cooking.  

    Once the timer goes off, take the basket out of the air fryer. 

    Enjoy delicious air fryer roasted carrots with a dip or with any main meal. 

    Variations and Substitutions

    Garlic: Freshly minced garlic or garlic powder could be used. However, I would suggest adding them halfway through cooking. Adding garlic at the beginning might get burnt and mask the true flavours of seasoned carrots.

    Sweetener: Brown sugar, agave syrup or any sweetener could be used instead of maple syrup.

    Air fryer roasted carrot flavour variations

    Ground cumin adds a lovely flavour to this baby carrots recipe. 

    Garam masala and a dash of lemon juice add an Indian flavour to the air fryer carrots.

    Can regular carrots be used instead of Chantenay carrots?

    Of course, you can. Even regular baby carrots are a great option too if you can't find these small carrots. 

    It is essential to cut regular carrots into equal sizes for uniform roasting. The size of the carrots determines how long you need to air fry them. Smaller the size quicker they roast.

    What to serve with baby carrots?

    These air fryer baby carrots are great snacks to nibble along with a dip such as a yogurt herb dipping sauce, honey mustard sauce or with peanut butter dipping sauce. 

    Pair it with simple weeknight meals such as zucchini boats, pumpkin pasta with spinach and hidden vegetable pasta.

    These super simple roasted carrots go well with lemon rice, quinoa, couscous and saffron rice. 

    It is perfect to pack in a lunch box with simple chickpea salad or corn cucumber tomato salad.

    Make kids' meals more interesting by adding these air fryer carrots. Pair it with chickpea vegetable patties or sweet potato patties for a meal.

    How to store air fryer baby carrots?

    Store leftover air fryer carrots in the fridge for a day or two in an airtight container. Reheat them in the air fryer for 3-4 mins.

    Tips and Tricks

    For proper roasting spread and space out carrots into a single layer in the basket. If necessary, divide and roast them in batches rather than overfilling the basket. 

    Do not forget to remove the basket and shake it well halfway through the roasting to make sure the carrots are well roasted. 

    Line the air fryer with baking sheet/parchment paper for easy cleaning. 

    Just a teaspoon oil is enough to roast baby carrots. 

    It's not necessary to peel these carrots instead scrub them with your fingers while washing to remove any dirt.

    I didn't trim the edges, feel free to do so if you wish to.

    Is an air fryer better than an oven?

    Yes, air frying is better than many conventional ovens, as they are economical and energy efficient. Air fryers take less time to cook food than ovens.

    Is air fryer food healthy?

    Air-fried food is definitely healthier than deep-fried and shallow-fried food as it requires less oil and significantly reduces calories. The best part is the extra fat drips through the basket into the pan under it.

    What are Chantenay carrots?

    These are the small broad carrots often available as baby carrots. They were hugely popular in the 18th century and are very rarely available in the markets now.
    These little gems originated from the Chantenay region of France, hence the name Chantenay carrots.

    Can I air fry frozen carrots?

    Yes, you can. In fact, cooking frozen carrots in air fryer is the quick and best option.

    Carrots are a rich source of beta-carotene and antioxidants. It is a perfect vegetable for people on a diet as it has low calories and helps with weight loss.

    How long to cook carrots in air fryer?

    The time to air fryer takes to cook baby carrots might vary depending on the type of air fryer you use. The size of carrots impacts the cooking time as well. 

    How to use up too many carrots?

    There are various ways to use up carrots. A few dishes that you can find on the blog: carrot rice, carrot pasta, carrot kosambari, carrot coconut kheer, carrot lentil soup and carrot chutney.

    You can even use them up in vegetable sambar, and veggie wraps.

    The alternative best option is to wash, peel and dice into rounds or cubes/grate, divide them into portions and store them in the ziplock bags in the freezer. Defrost and use when required.

    • 1 Mixing Bowl

    Ingredients

    1 Cup = 250ml ; 1 Tablespoon = 15ml ; 1 Teaspoon = 5ml

    • 235 gms (or) 1 Cup Chantenay Carrots/Baby Carrots
    • 1 Teaspoon Olive Oil
    • 1 Teaspoon Maple Syrup
    • 1 Teaspoon Sage
    • Salt as required
    • Pepper as required

    Instructions

    • Wash carrots well in cold running tap water.
      235 gms (or) 1 Cup Chantenay Carrots/Baby Carrots
    • Place carrots in a bowl. Add oil, salt, pepper, sage and maple syrup. Mix well until carrots are coated with oil and seasoning.

    • Put the basket in the air fryer, set the temperature to 200C (350F) for 14 minutes and air fry baby carrots.
    • Take the basket out of the air fryer half way through roasting, shake well, put it back and continue cooking.  
    • Once the timer goes off, take the basket out of the air fryer. 

    Notes
