This fruit is naturally sweet and refreshing, with extremely low calories, making it a guilt-free summer option.
Watermelon slushie, fresh watermelon juice and watermelon salad without feta are delicious ways to encourage kids and adults who generally don't like watermelon to consume it without any fuss.
Ingredients

- Watermelon: Use well-ripened watermelon
- Herbs: I have used fresh mint leaves to enhance the flavour of lemonade.
- Lemon: Fresh lemon juice imparts a fresh flavour. You could use lime instead of lemon.
- Sweetener: I have used maple syrup, but feel free to use any other sweetener of your choice.
See the recipe card for quantities.
Step By Step Instructions

Step 1: Soak basil seeds in a small bowl with ¼ cup water for 15 minutes until they absorb all the water and double their size.

Step 2: Cut each watermelon half into quarters and dice it into cubes, discarding the rind.

Substitutions and Variations
Fizzy: Add a dash of sparkling water to make it fizzy.
Ginger: Try a small piece of ginger to add a subtle spicy kick.
Sweetener: You could try honey or agave syrup instead of maple syrup.
Storage
Watermelon basil seed cooler tastes best when consumed immediately after preparing it. However, leftovers could be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Give it a good stir before consuming.
Tips and Tricks
Lime: I would suggest using freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice instead of bottled juice, as it imparts a refreshing flavour and taste.
Watermelon: Always use chilled watermelon to make this cooler as it tastes best when served chilled.
Sweetener: If watermelon is already sweet, you can leave out sweetener.
How to Pick Good Watermelon?
Here are a few quick and easy ways to choose a good watermelon:
1. Pick a watermelon with a dull-looking dark green rind. The shiny fruit indicates an underripe fruit.
2. It must be heavy for its size.
3. The yellow field spot indicates the ripeness of the fruit. The large webbing and dark yellow colour indicate the fruit has spent a considerable amount of time resting on the ground to ripen. Do not choose the fruit with a white spot or almost no spots.
4. Ripe fruit makes a deep sound when lightly tapped with your knuckles on the rind.
