Crispy Spiced Tahini Roasted Butter Beans

Crispy spiced tahini roasted butter beans – golden, crunchy and Middle Eastern inspired flavourful dish perfect as a high protein snack, side dish or as salad topper. It is gluten free, vegan and oil free dish.

Oil is the common ingredient used in roasted bean recipes to get that crunchy texture. But in this recipe, it is not required as tahini helps crisp up the beans perfectly.

I used butter beans for their large size and creamy texture. The roasted butter beans with perfectly crispy outer and a melt in the mouth soft inside texture make it extremely irresistible and addictive, making it hard to stop snacking on.

These homemade oven roasted white beans are a healthier alternative to store bought snacks, which are often loaded with preservatives and excess salt. Butter beans are also known as lima beans.

Substitutions and Variations

Herbs: Fresh parsley can be substituted with dried parsley.

Garlic: You can use fresh garlic instead of granules.

Storage

Store leftover tahini butter beans in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Allow oven roasted white beans to cool completely before storing, as trapped condensation can reduce the crispiness of beans.

Reheat them in the oven for 5-8 mins to crisp them up again before serving.

Tips and Tricks

Rinse Beans: As the liquid in canned beans usually contains added salt, it’s best to rinse the beans well after draining to remove any residual salt.

Toss: Ensure to toss beans in tahini seasoning gently to prevent them from breaking apart.

Dry Beans: Dry butter beans thoroughly before tossing with tahini seasoning, as it helps coat evenly and crisp up.

Single Layer: Arrange spiced butter beans on a lined baking tray in a single layer to help roast well and achieve a crispy texture.

Avoid Overcrowding: If you are planning a large quantity, either divide beans across two trays or roast them in multiple batches. Avoid overcrowding the tray, as the beans tend to steam rather than roast, resulting in a soggy instead of crispy texture.

FAQ

Can I use dried butter beans?

Yes, but you have to soak dried butter beans overnight and cook them until soft and tender before using them in the recipe. Since soaking and cooking are time-consuming processes its better to plan ahead if you want to use dried butter beans.
Alternatively, you can cook a large batch, let them cool completely and freeze in portions. Thaw a portion in the fridge overnight before making roasted beans.

Why are my roasted butter beans not crispy?

The common reasons for butter beans not turning crispy are
1. Not drying beans properly before coating them with tahini.
2. Too much tahini coating leaves beans soft rather than crispy.
3. Overcrowded baking tray causes beans to steam instead of roasting properly.
4. Roasting at low temperature prevents the outer layer of beans from crisping up.
