The most challenging part in my house is to make kids eat avocados. My kids don’t think this is a fascinating fruit. They consider it to be tasteless and flavourless! So smoothies and dips such as avocado yogurt dip are the only way to incorporate this fruit into a kid’s diet.

My toddler son’s favourite task is to put the ingredients in the blender jar, rotating the knob to turn the blender on and off. He loves taking turns with his sister. At times it does get messy, but it’s all worth it as kids cherish the time together.

Enabling kids to help in kitchen tasks not only helps them gain important life skills but is a great way to inspire them to foster healthy eating habits from a young age.

Bananas not only act as a natural sweetener but contribute a creamy texture and nutrient boost to the smoothie. Fully ripe bananas are extremely sweet. The more the black spots, the higher the sweetness. Similarly, avocados give a really creamy and smooth texture to the smoothie.

Store this green smoothie in an airtight container or a jar with a lid on in the fridge and finish it off in a day. The smoothie turns brown if left longer.

Tips and Tricks

Do not add ice cubes as they alter the consistency of the smoothie and make it thin. Instead, use chilled or slightly frozen avocado along with a frozen banana to ensure the smoothie is thick and super chilled.

Use a food processor or a powerful blender that can handle frozen fruits.

Adjust the milk to get the required consistency.

Too thick: add more milk to thin the smoothie down.

Too thin: add a banana or avocado to thicken the smoothie.

FAQ

How to tell if an avocado is ripe?

The ripe avocado feels slightly soft but not mushy to the touch and is typically dark green.

The other way to judge how ripe the avocado is by peeling the stem on the top off. If it separates effortlessly and has a green shade underneath, then it’s ripe and ready to devour.

How to ripen the avocados?

Place unripe avocados on the countertop for 3-7 to ripe. The specific number of days it takes to ripe depends on how unripe the avocados are. Placing them in the fridge slows the ripening process.

The same holds true for ripe avocados as well. Storing them in the refrigerator assists ripe avocados remain fresh for longer and reduces the process of ripening too much.

Why does my banana avocado smoothie turn brown?

Both avocados and bananas have the tendency to turn brown, so the smoothie containing these fruits turns brown. Whenever the flesh of these fruits is exposed to air, they undergo an oxidation process resulting in discolouration.

Can I make the smoothie ahead of time?

I wouldn’t recommend making it in advance as both fruits cause discolouration. The discoloured smoothie is not so enticing to consume, and the taste might be altered as well. So I would suggest including it in your meal plans to assist you with grocery shopping but make it fresh whenever you plan to consume it.

How to freeze bananas for smoothies?

Peel the banana skin and chop it into 1/2-inch slices. Place them on a lined baking tray and put the tray in the freezer for 3-4 hours or until banana slices freeze solid. Transfer the frozen banana slices to a freezer bag or zip-lock bag and store them in the freezer for up to 6 months. Ensure to remove the air before sealing the bag.
