Banana: Fresh ripe banana is used here. Even an overripe banana works well in this recipe.
Oats: Old-fashioned oats, also referred to as "rolled oats" are perfect for their texture and taste. Porridge oats or quick oats can be used. However, the texture, taste and differ from old-fashioned oats.
Milk: I use dairy milk. Any plant-based milk would work.
Sweetener: Maple syrup is used here. Feel free to use any sweetener of your choice.
Cocoa powder: Unsweetened cocoa powder has been used here.
Walnuts: As a topping to add a crunchy texture to oatmeal.
Vanilla extract: To enhance the flavour of the oatmeal.
See the recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions and Variations
Vegan version: use any plant-based milk of your choice instead of dairy milk.
Sweetener: feel free to use any sweetener of your choice instead of maple syrup.
Nuts and Seeds: Use any nuts or seeds that you have on hand - cashews, almonds, sunflower seeds or melon seeds. Flax meal or chia seeds could be used as well.
Yogurt: A spoon of yogurt topping along with nuts makes a healthy addition.
Vanilla: A warm spice such as cinnamon or nutmeg could be used instead of vanilla.
Storage
Overnight oats can be stored for up to 5 days in the fridge in an airtight jar.
Consider storing it in the freezer for longer shelf life.
Tips
Once you take the oats jar from the fridge, let it stand on the counter for 10-15 minutes to take the chill off if you do not want to consume chilled overnight oats.
Ensure to add sufficient milk to get the creamy porridge-like oats. While preparing you might feel that's too much milk but the next morning it would be of the right consistency as the oats absorb it.
Do not add too much cocoa powder as it would overpower the flavour and turn oatmeal slightly bitter.
FAQ
Yes, it is essential to store overnight oats in the fridge to prevent it from spoiling. On warm sunny days, there are high chances of microorganism growth if the banana overnight oats is not kept in the fridge.
Overnight oats is an easy method of preparing oats that don't involve cooking. It is as simple as combining all the ingredients in a bowl, jar or container and letting it sit overnight.
The only time-consuming part is allowing the raw oats to soak for several hours to absorb the liquid and soften.
