A great addition to meal plans.

The options to customise it are endless.

Made with basic ingredients

Ingredients

Oats: Rolled oats, also called old fashioned oats, are great because of their texture and taste. You have the option of using either porridge oats or quick oats as well. However, the texture and taste could differ from old-fashioned oats.

Milk: Although I used unsweetened almond milk, any plant based milk, such as coconut, soy, or oats milk, would work.

Sweetener: I have used maple syrup, but you can use any sweetener of your choice.

Cherries: Fresh cherries are preferable, but frozen cherries can be used instead.

Yogurt: Store-bought plain greek yogurt works, but homemade creamy yogurt is also a good option.

Chia seeds: I have incorporated chia seeds for added health benefits.

Flavour enhancer: vanilla extract to enhance the flavour of overnight oats.

Spice: cinnamon powder to infuse warm spiced flavour.

Substitutions and Variations

Sweetener: Don’t limit yourself to maple syrup, use your favorite sweetener instead.

Nuts and seeds: cashews, walnuts, sunflower seeds, flax seeds or melon seeds can be used. Almonds and cherries complement each other well. Elevate the cherry almond overnight oats by topping with slivered almonds.

Dairy free: To make dairy free overnight oats, switch to coconut yogurt instead of dairy yogurt.

Spices: A warm spice such as cardamom or nutmeg could used instead of cinnamon.

Gluten-free version: Use certified gluten free rolled oats instead of regular ones.

Protein: To increase your protein intake, try adding peanut butter or almond butter.

Storage

You can keep cherry overnight oats in airtight mason jars in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Tips and Tricks

In case you don’t prefer to eat overnight oats cold, allow the oats jar to stay on the counter for 10-15 minutes after taking it out of the fridge.

Adding an adequate amount of milk will help achieve a porridge-like texture. The milk may seem like too much, but the oats will absorb it and be perfect in the morning.

Ensure that the bowl can accommodate the oats as they absorb the liquid and double in size.

FAQ

Are steel-cut oats a suitable option for overnight oats?

Of course, you can. Expect a chewier texture than rolled oats and a longer soaking time will be necessary.
