Mango Cherry Popsicles (Dairy Free Popsicles)

Mango cherry popsicles – dairy free, gluten free and refined sugar free kid-friendly summer treat made with just 3 ingredients. Ideal as an after-school snack or an indulgence to relish anytime on a hot sunny day.

Call it ice pops, fruit lollies or popsicles, you can never get enough of this dairy free frozen treat. This is an amazing way to incorporate fruits into a kid’s diet if they are not interested in eating whole fruits.

It is also an ideal option to keep kids hydrated on scorching hot days. The bonus is that these are irresistibly addictive and kids just can’t stop at one.

Mango and cherry make a lovely duo with a ruby red and vibrant yellow hue, making these popsicles delightful. The extremely sweet mango combined with the sweet and slightly tart cherries is an interesting flavour combination to try.

This popsicle recipe is made of real fruits without any preservatives or artificial colours. So these are not only healthy and tasty but also a budget saver.

For my kids, warm sunny days are meant for frozen treats. The freezer has to be stocked up with frozen treats – strawberry frozen yogurt, mango cherry popsicles, strawberry yogurt bark, watermelon slushie, vanilla ice cream, raspberry ice cream and popsicles are a few to name. Fruit pops are a newfound interest in my home. In fact, an obsession!

Now it’s a ritual for kids to make popsicles every weekend. We are trying so many flavours – apple popsicles, banana popsicles, strawberry yogurt popsicles

Ingredients

  • Cherries: I have used frozen cherries as I couldn’t find fresh ones in the local supermarket.
  • Mango: I have used pureed mango that I already had in hand. Check the FAQ section for the instructions to make homemade mango puree.
  • Milk: To make these vegan popsicles, I have used coconut milk. Feel free to use any plant based milk of your choice.

How to make mango cherry popsicles at home?

In a blender, add thawed pitted cherries and coconut milk.

Close the blender jar with a lid and blend until smooth and creamy.

Fill half the mould with a blended cherry mixture.

Fill the remaining half of each mould with pureed mango.

Close each popsicle mould with a handle.

Place the popsicles with the base in the freezer overnight or for at least 6 hours.

6 hours later, healthy homemade cherry mango popsicles are ready to enjoy!

How to make popsicles without mould?

Do not have a popsicle mould? You can still make it using small disposable paper cups. Fill 1/3 of the paper cups with blended cherry mixture and another 1/3 portion with mango puree. Cover and seal each cup with aluminium foil. Make a small slit with a knife and insert a wooden popsicle stick. Freeze the cups overnight or atleast4 hours until mango and cherry popsicles solidify.

Substitutions and Variations

Spices: Try adding cardamom to the mango mixture and cinnamon to the cherry mixture for extra flavour.

Fruits: You could use fresh cherries and mangoes instead of frozen fruit or fruit puree. 

Lime Juice: A dash of lime juice to the mango puree adds the zing and elevates the flavour.

Storage

These simple colourful mango cherry popsicles could be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months if stored properly. To save space in the freezer, remove the base once the popsicles are frozen and then store them in the zip-lock bag.

Top tip

Water: Either run the popsicle mould under running warm water for a minute or dip the mould in a container filled with water. This helps to take the popsicles out of the mould easily. 

Sweetener: We haven’t used any sweetener as the sweetness of the mango is sufficient. You could use maple syrup or any other sweetener of your choice if required.

Popsicles: The number of popsicles you get depends on the size of the mould.

FAQ

How to make popsicles for infants?

I do not recommend canned coconut milk for infants. So substitute it with water or yogurt to blend cherries and follow the same procedure of freezing in the moulds. These fresh fruit popsicles are a great way to soothe sore gums during teething. 

How to make coconut milk at home to make popsicles?

Ensure to use only the milk that you extract the first time as the subsequent batches of coconut milk won’t be as concentrated and creamy as the first batch.

Are popsicles the same as ice lollies?

They both refer to the same frozen treat on a stick that comes in many fruit flavours. Popsicles is a term used in America and ice lolly is predominantly a British term used in the United Kingdom. 

How to make mango puree at home?

Wash the ripe mangoes and slice the mango down at the centre as close to the large pit as possible. Repeat the process to slice the other side of the mango.

Score the flesh of each mango half with a knife in a crosshatch pattern and scoop it out with a spoon. Place the mango chunks in the blender and blitz until smooth. Add a spoon or two of water only if required to make the blending process easier.
