Substitutions and Variations
Oil: You can substitute olive oil with any other cooking oil suitable for frying.
Gluten Free: Use tamari instead of soy sauce.
Sesame Oil: Drizzle a little sesame oil on top of sesame fried tofu just before you switch the heat off to intensify the flavours.
Sweetener: Stir in a dash of maple syrup to the soy sauce mix for a touch of sweetness to otherwise spicy fried tofu.
Flour: You can substitute rice flour with plain flour/all purpose flour.
Storage
Store leftover pan fried sesame tofu in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days.
Reheat: Arrange tofu pieces on a lined baking tray and heat in the oven until they are piping hot and crisp up.
Tips and Tricks
Tofu: Use extra firm tofu as it holds its shape better.
Extra Moisture: Make sure to pat dry with kitchen towels to remove as much moisture as possible.
Size: Cut tofu into equal-sized pieces for even cooking.
Sesame Seeds: Add them at the end after you switch the heat off, as sesame seeds can burn quickly if they are in the pan too long.
Overcrowd Pan: Fry tofu in batches if necessary and make sure there’s some space between tofu pieces to allow for proper frying and easier tossing.
Serving Suggestions
Serve sesame fried tofu as a snack or an appetiser.
Use it in wraps such as vegetarian tortilla wraps and roasted vegetable wraps with hummus.
For an additional protein boost, add it to salads such as sweet potato bean salad, butternut squash black eyed pea salad or quinoa vegetable salad.
