Substitutions and Variations
Nuts and Seeds: Add pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds for extra crunch and nutrition.
Coconut Coating: Roll the balls in shredded coconut instead of almonds for change of flavour and texture.
Spices: Try cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom for added warmth and flavour.
Sweetener: Maple syrup, honey or agave syrup can be used if the natural sweetness from dates and figs is not sufficient.
Storage
Store the no bake fig energy balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
You could freeze them for a longer shelf life. Freeze rolled fig energy balls on a baking sheet until solid and then transfer them to a freezer-friendly container or ziplock bag. Ensure to thaw them well in the fridge before serving. Use up within 3 months.
Tips and Tricks
Sticky Sweeteners: Dates work well as a sweetener and to bind the ingredients together. Adjust the quantity based on your desired sweetness and consistency.
Consistency: If the mixture feels too wet, add more oats flour gradually until it reaches a consistency that can be easily shaped into balls.
If the mixture is too dry and you find it difficult to roll into a ball, then add a little coconut oil or a little water to help get the right consistency.
Grease Hands: Slightly grease your hands with oil to prevent the fig mixture from sticking while shaping.
