The blend of creamy cheese, sweet dried cranberries and crunchy nuts makes it an exciting and fun dish! This cranberry walnut wrap is not only delicious but also a nutritious choice for kids.
I encourage my kids to experiment with various combinations of fruits, spreads, and toppings to find their favourite flavours. By involving them in the preparation, I'm not only helping them make a tasty snack but also inspiring them to try new foods.
Ingredients
- Dairy: I used plain soft cheese, you can use flavoured cheese if you prefer.
- Nuts and Dried Fruits: Dried cranberries and walnuts are used here.
- Flatbread: I used seeded wholemeal tortilla, but you can choose any flatbread.
See the recipe card for quantities.
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1: Warm the tortillas on a skillet or microwave for a few seconds on each side until they are soft and pliable. (only an adult has to do it. Watch out young kids when they are near the hot burner).
Lay one tortilla flat on a wooden board or a plate. Spread a generous layer of the soft cheese. (Let the child spread it)
Now sprinkle chopped walnuts and cranberries over soft cheese. (this is the fun part for kids, don't forget to watch my preschooler having fun in the video!)
Starting from one end, tightly roll up the tortilla. Keep the roll as tight as possible without squeezing out the filling. (little hands need help rolling up!)
Cut each wrap in half. (only adults should do it)
Serve delicious and nutritious homemade apple wraps with a side of yogurt fruit dip, chocolate fruit dip or dates caramel sauce for dipping.
Substitutions and Variations
Sweetener: Add a dash of maple syrup or honey if your kids prefer their wraps to be a little sweet.
Granola: Sprinkle almond vanilla granola or chocolate granola on top for a crunchy texture.
Spices: Sprinkle a pinch of ground cinnamon or cardamom for extra flavour.
Flatbread: Try chapati, paratha or any other wholemeal flatbread instead of a tortilla.
Storage
Cover cranberry walnut tortilla wraps with clingfilm or aluminium foil tightly, place it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge for a day or two. Take it out of the fridge, uncover and then cut the wraps when ready to serve.
Tips and Tricks
Don’t Overfill: Ensure that kids don’t overstuff the tortilla with cranberries and walnuts, as it can be difficult to roll it up without making a mess.
Helping Hand: Young kids might need assistance from an adult to roll the tortilla tightly to keep it from unrolling.
Heat Tortilla: Heat them just until they are warm and pliable. Overheating could cause them to crisp up and become challenging to roll up.
