Substitutions and Variations
Sweetener: Instead of maple syrup, use agave nectar, coconut sugar or date syrup for sweetness.
Fruits: Experiment with other dried fruits and nuts such as apricots, walnuts, cashews for a different texture and flavour.
Storage
To preserve the freshness, flavor, and texture of homemade crunchy granola, proper storage is key. Once it has completely cooled, transfer the granola to an airtight container and keep it at room temperature. When stored correctly, homemade granola can remain fresh and delicious for few weeks.
Tips and Tricks
Use Rolled Oats: Use rolled oats also known as old fashioned oats for making granola because they provide a nice texture and absorb flavours well.
Adjust Sweetness: You can adjust the sweetness of your crunchy granola by adjusting the amount of maple syrup.
Even Coating: Make sure the wet ingredients thoroughly coat all the dry ingredients. Mix well to ensure everything is evenly combined.
Low and Slow Baking: Bake your granola at a lower temperature (around 290°F or 140°C) and for a longer time. This prevents burning and allows flavours to develop slowly.
Use Parchment Paper or silicone mat: Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
Avoid Light and Heat: Keep your granola in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Exposure to heat and light can cause the granola to become rancid more quickly.
