Fresh Lemongrass Ginger Tea

Fresh lemongrass ginger tea – a soothing and refreshing herbal tea made with fresh lemongrass, ginger and sweetened with honey. This refined sugar-free, caffeine-free and dairy-free tea makes a healthy and aromatic morning drink to kick-start your day.

Lemongrass has complex and sophisticated flavours with a citrusy aroma, it imparts a lemon flavour that is so refreshing and relaxing. A small piece of ginger adds a hint of mild spicy flavour. Both these ingredients are a powerhouse of properties that have an abundance of health benefits.

Ingredients

As the name indicates, lemongrass and ginger are the main ingredients required to make this tea. I’ve used both fresh but you can use frozen or dried lemongrass.

I’ve used honey as a sweetener. Feel free to swap agave or maple syrup for honey.

How to make tea with lemongrass and ginger?

Slice lemongrass stalks lengthwise and crush them slightly.

Bring water to a rolling boil in a saucepan, add lemongrass stalk, ginger and simmer for 10 minutes.

Pour the tea in a cup, mix in honey and enjoy hot and aromatic tea.

Variations and Substitutions

Add a dash of lemon or lime juice to enhance the flavour and add an extra citrus note to your tea.

For a vegan version, swap maple syrup or agave for honey.

A few fresh mint leaves make a great addition and add a peppery flavour. Roughly chop the leaves and steep them with lemongrass.

Storage

This herbal drink tastes best when consumed straight away. However, the leftover tea could be stored in the fridge for up to 2-3 days in a tightly sealed container. Allow the tea to cool down to room temperature before storing it in the fridge.

Health Benefits

Ginger: It is well known for its ability to aid digestion. It also helps improve immunity, relieve nausea and helps cope with flu, cold and cough.

Lemongrass: It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties.

How to make Lemongrass Ginger Iced Tea?

Follow the same process to make tea, let it cool down to room temperature and then chill it in the fridge for at least 3 hours or until you are ready to serve. Once chilled, pour tea over a glass of ice cubes. Garnish with a lemon wheel and enjoy your tea!

If you don’t have time to chill the tea then let it cool down slightly and pour in a glass over ice and enjoy!

I’ve used store-bought lemongrass stalks, you can use lemongrass leaves if you get them in stores or if you grow them in your garden.

FAQ

Can I make lemongrass tea without a burner?

Of course, you can. The alternate method of making this ginger and lemongrass tea is to steep all the spices in a heat-resistant pitcher/teapot and mix in lemon juice and honey just before enjoying.

Steeping time depends on how strong you want your tea to be. The longer the ingredients are steeped the stronger the tea would be.

How to make lemongrass ginger tea with milk?

Bring a cup of water in a pot to boil.
Brew either tea leaves or tea bags along with lemongrass and ginger in the water.
Stir in 2-3 tablespoons of milk and switch the heat off.
Pour the tea in a glass over the strainer, mix in maple syrup and serve.

Ingredients

1 Cup = 250ml ; 1 Tablespoon =15ml ; 1 Teaspoon = 5ml

  • 1 stalk Fresh lemongrass
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 1 inch Fresh ginger root peeled and roughly sliced into discs
  • 1 Teaspoon Honey

Instructions

  • Slice lemongrass stalks lengthwise and crush them slightly.

    This is amazing and refreshing. A personal favourite of us both at home. I make the hot version for winters and the cold version with loads of ice to deal with Indian Summers. Clean, fresh flavors and so good for the body! Natural coolants are the best.

    Lemongrass and ginger flavors combined.. same pinch Geetha. I love this simple herbal tea and would give anything to have a cold glass of this tea right now as its too hot in Mombasa. We tend to enjoy the hot version whenever we come down with colds and coughs.
