Although cooking with kids can be kids, it’s important to prioritise their safety. Only allow older children to cook near the stove if you feel they are capable of handling it, and keep younger ones at a safe distance while it’s in use.

Always supervise children when they’re using the stovetop. For more information, refer to the recipe and safety disclaimer.

Ingredients

  • Fruits: Fresh black grapes
  • Sweetener: I used maple syrup but feel free to use any other healthy sweetener.
  • Gelling Agent: Agar agar powder

See the recipe card for quantities.

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1: Wash grapes, remove stems and blend them in a blender or juicer.

Step 2: Place the fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a deep-bottomed bowl.

Step 3: Pour the juice over the strainer/cheesecloth to remove the skin.

Step 4: Pour grape juice into a saucepan. Add maple syrup, agar agar and mix well with a spoon until well combined.

Step 5: Switch the heat on and boil over medium heat until agar agar fully dissolves and the mixture becomes smooth.

Step 6: Switch the heat off once the mixture thickens slightly.

Step 7: Let the child pour the mixture into the silicone mould.

Step 8: Set the mould side for 2-3 hours until the gummies are fully set.

Once gummies have firmed up, pop them out of the mould and store them in an airtight container in the fridge.

Substitutions and Variations

Sweetener: You can use any other healthy sweetener such as agave syrup or honey instead of maple syrup.

Ginger: A small spoon of grated ginger adds a punch and flavour to the gummies. Try it only if you are sure that your kid likes it.

Fruit: Substitute black grapes with green grapes or any other fruits for flavour variation.

Storage

Black grape gummies stay good in the fridge for about 10 days if stored properly in an airtight container.

Tips and Tricks

Fresh Juice: Use fresh grape juice for natural vibrant colour and flavour.

Silicone Mould: Use silicone moulds as they are flexible and make it easy to pop the set gummies out without sticking.

Setting Time: Allow gummies to set completely and harden before you attempt to remove them from mould.

Sweetener: Adjust the amount of maple syrup depending on the tartness or sweetness of the grapes.
